A Matter of Credibility: A Filipino's Message to the Philippines

My Philippines, you have endured numerous sufferings. You are a conqueror of slavery, a home of bravery, a free country. And now here you are in another millennium, facing the future with your spouse, your governance.
However, at this current situation, we people refuse to see the future with your governance.
An earthquake of corruption, a fire of poverty, a flood of unemployment, a storm of terrorism, a tornado of killings: how can your other half do this to you? My dear nation, your wife has credibility no more. It is a shame to admit it, yes, but it is the truth. It is how my fellow Filipinos see her: a pot with a mixture of wickedness, dirt and filth. How can we ever trust her again?
Do you feel the pain of her scandalizing you? On how Janet Lim Napoles spent your people’s taxes for her own selfish being? On whom her politicians are really serving to? On how they spent each sweat, blood and centavo we earn to contribute for your progress actually goes on their pockets? I can hear complaints and rallies and badmouthing, all addressed to you, which is an injustice to your pride. It is not you who is at fault, it is her. And now some of us shames to be a Filipino.
My beloved Philippines, I am a university student and at this young age I am exposed to what the real problems your wife has. She is addicted to pleasure and can endure seeing us in agony. My father should be earning now more than the minimum wage if the government shared her blessings by reducing the tax cost, giving me enough money for my tuition fees and allowances as I stay in the university. I can be studying in an air conditioned room with complete books, a computer set, a steady board and projector my professor can use to teach me if only enough budget is given to provide us that. I could have been enjoying home where mortgage are already paid, with water and electric consumption at ease. I can leave my school with a lot of knowledge and honor and face the world heads up. But I can’t, because I would be a fool not to see the reality.
The integrity of your government is now in question. Filipinos have mouths to feed, bodies to be sheltered, minds to be educated, and every one peso counts. Foreign investors lose the desire to negotiate with you because of the bad reputation the government instilled in their minds. Other Filipinos leave you to risk their lives on lands they don’t even have the knowing of. The downfall of the economy and the rise of the cost of basic needs: we suffer because your wife enjoys pleasure. Your people fight amongst themselves, drawing lines where in fact we are living in the same ground. Filipinos have lost their trust, I say unto you and even question, “Why am I a Filipino?”
Politicians are people too and I know they want progress as much as what we do: a progress that I think you are worthy to partake. However, they must not be forgetful that without us there will be no them. Without you, they are nothing. My country, it is time for your wife to change, not a fake conversion, but a real transformation. And it would be an honor to be a catalyst of this revolution.
My treasured homeland, there is nothing I can do at my own strength. But with the help of my fellow Filipino students, and the people who still believe that there is hope, we will cleanse ourselves first. Practice obedience, trust, honesty and respect in our daily lives. Then, as we move forward, we will observe proper election conducts, where cheating can be lessened and hopefully avoided. Where new generation of politicians will learn how to serve you and the people wholeheartedly, accept defeat, and work with us to attain improvement. As we move towards the government, we will make her realize of her wrongdoings and transform her by letting her see the truth: journalists will write verity, physicians will treat anyone equally, lawyers will convey what is right, soldiers will protect you for freedom and not for money, and politicians will serve you with sincerity. Then we will hope, that your wife will see what we both see: the real face of the future.

My Philippines let me tell you that there is hope for us: a hope to change the credibility of the government and establish her reputation back. Tomorrow may not be it, and it will not be easy to do so, but I tell you that I believe. I believe that there is hope to rebuild the worthiness of your administration and gaining back the trust of the populace. I believe that you deserve nothing but to be happy. And I know your happiness and it is to see your government and your people work hand-in-hand to see where the future leads you.
